Writing (Ages 9-12)

Teacher: Lauren Mitchell

Age of Students: 9-13

Class Fee: $7

Length: 2 Semesters

Prerequisites: Students must be reading and writing independently at a fourth grade level.

Class Description:

In the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) class we will learn a new approach to writing. Your children will learn to take notes from literature, find key words in literature and then write a story using quality adjectives, strong verbs, and “‘-ly” adverbs. The students will slowly and effectively build their writing skills through the course of the year.

Homework Requirements:

There will be up to 30 minutes per week of homework, but most writing will occur during class time.

Required Materials:

Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales

Students Resource Notebook

pen or pencil

notebook paper

Notes:

In order for the writing process to be taught effectively, both the Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales and Student Resource Notebook must be purchased and brought weekly for use in class. The Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales is a consumable (yearly purchase) book that lays out the process in an extremely effective way. The Student Resource Notebook is a non-consumable (one time purchase) reference book that can be used now and over the course of your child’s future IEW classes. Both of these books work together and are an investment toward your child’s ability to become a confident writer.
